Zenith El Primero "Andreoli"
No introduction needed for the most legendary chronograph movement ever made. Yet even within the El Primero universe, there are chapters that remain largely undocumented—whispered among seasoned collectors rather than written in books. Neither Manfred Rössler nor Joël Duval go deep into these references, leaving a fascinating blind spot in Zenith scholarship.
The story unfolds in Italy, roughly between 1985 and the mid-1990s—a period where Italian collectors were not just participants, but tastemakers shaping the future of vintage watch culture. While the spotlight often falls on icons like the Rolex Daytona, Italy quietly fostered something equally compelling within Zenith.
After the military-rooted Zenith Cairelli and the now-celebrated Zenith De Luca, a lesser-known lineage emerged: the 06.XXXX.XX references. Behind them stands Guglielmo Andreoli , a Bologna-based goldsmith who crafted exceptional 18K yellow gold cases, each marked “50 BO,” denoting both maker and origin.
These were not standard production pieces. They were elevated executions of the El Primero—Italian in spirit, exclusive in distribution, and likely produced in extremely limited numbers. Estimates suggest a total output of around 500 pieces across all references, with some variants existing in fewer than 10 examples.
The 06.0191.400 perfectly captures this ethos. Its 38mm yellow gold case, with round pushers, leans stylistically toward the elegance of the 1960s, while housing one of the most advanced automatic chronograph movements of its time. The two-tone champagne and black dial, enriched by applied Roman numerals, creates a visual tension between sport and classicism. A peripheral tachymeter scale, 30-minute and 12-hour counters, and a discreet date between 4 and 5 complete a layout that is both functional and refined.
